First off, your going to need these files.
Second, navigate to your home folder. Press Ctrl-H, and make a new folder named ".minecraft".

Third, place the two files into the folder you just made.

Fourth, open Main Menu (Under Settings). Open the games tab, and click New Item.
Set the name to "Minecraft".
Fill in Command with "java -jar minecraft.jar".
For Working Directory, click the browse button, and navigate to the .minecraft folder you made.
Remember, to see the .minecraft folder you need to press Ctrl-H.

Fifth, click the icon button, and select icon from image files.
Navigate to the .minecraft folder, and select favicon.png.
Then click OK.

Click save, and thats it!  You can now open Minecraft from your games menu.

Please try before asking. The same procedure works in 13.04.

Yo tampoco tengo una carpeta de juegos, la estoy creando en el escritorio como un "lanzador" común; el equivalente a accesos directos en Windows.

You should mention that Java must be installed first, for example openjdk-7-jre.

K so I did every thing correct. When I go to start it up in the games menu it doesn't work, but when I start it up in the desktop a thing pops up and says that this isn't a safe program to run, I click launch anyway and then it still doesn't work. So did i miss a step or what?

I followed the instructions, but it doesn't launch from games. I can go into the folder and just run minecraft.jar and it runs fine, it even displays it with the icon when running, but when I go into the games menu and click Minecraft, nothing happens.

I agree with Rubberduck, you might wanna mention that you need java. did everything right, and it didn't run, until i looked in comments and saw him mention that. installed java then it ran fine. (im still a noob to xubuntu btw lol) but none the less good guide, very thorough instructions. Thanks

The instructions did not work for me. The downloading and creating folders is fine. When I go to properties for the minecraft.jar file I do not have a checkbox to allow me to run it as an executable file. When I try to install it in the Main Menu in Games I only get Name, Command and Comment in that order. Same thing if I try to adjust the properties of any existing menu items. I do not get the same dialog box that you show.
Are you using Thunar or something else? How can I allow .jar files to be run as executables?
